under attack in the time that it was so easy for them
to have a visa and leave?! Why didn’t he leave!
Never have I, in my lifetime, witnessed
such bravery. Elders, youths, women, men, and
kids; all are courageous, tigers here in Gaza.
I remember the driver, Mohammed, who
asked me about the reason behind my coming to the
Gaza Strip.
‘I’m from Bethlehem, the West Bank,’ he
said. ‘My family members and my relatives are all
there; my parents, siblings, wife and my 3 kids. I
haven’t seen them since 2002 except for two times
at the Erez Crossing for only one hour.’

Thousands have become homeless in
only some minutes that kids were not able to take
even some of their toys upon leaving their houses.
UNRWA opened its schools as shelters for most of
these people.
While I was walking in the school’s corridor,
there was about 2000 people, every 60 people in one
room; the number of kids was huge!
About 1/3 of the people were under the age of 18.
I was still walking in the corridor when a
little, soft voice followed me from behind saying,
‘Take me with you.’ It was Maram, a little 4-year-
old kid appealing me to take her to a safer place for
