12. Testimony of Sanaa Al-Astal, 43, Mother of
Martyr Omar:1
My children and I woke up at Dawn Prayer
as usual. I started preparing breakfast when Omar,
my 16-year-old son, came to me and said, “I’m in a
hurry, mom, and I am hungry!” I quickly prepared
a sandwich for him and asked him not to go far,
because warplanes and drones were hovering all
over the sky. He took the sandwich and went out.
Minutes later, parplanes fired a missile
nearby. My sons went out to see what happened.
My 12-year-old son came to me screaming and told
me that the target was the land next to our house. It
never meant anything to me as hitting lands is safer
than hitting people.
Minutes later, people were shouting and
saying things I could hardly understand. Their
sounds were unclear, but understood that two people
were killed in that airstrike. Only then did I know it
was my son, Omar, and my brother in law were
the victims! It was hard to believe it was over, that
I used to have a son who is no longer there! It was
hard to believe, hard to bear, and hard to accept.
